Mahjongg Fundamentals Class Description
Who it’s for
Participants new to the game or early in their Mahjongg experience who would like to learn or refresh on the fundamentals in a small group setting of 4-8 participants before moving on to more complex aspects of the game.
Classes are offered in regularly in Apex, Bald Head Island and Pinehurst, NC, and by request in other US locations.
Class objectives
Learn the object of the game, how the official National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) Card is used and how the tiles align with the card.
Discuss hand variations of the official card and how those variations can affect player decision-making and potential success.
Understand the rules and basic strategies for success.
Review the steps of play, and how to complete each, and begin hands-on practice building the walls, choosing East, dealing, racking/organizing, the Charleston, how and when to pick a hand, when to pivot and how to play offensively and defensively.
What to expect
Expect to have a lot of fun! You’ll be learning alongside people who share your interest in this wildly popular game.
This is a 6-hour, two-part class, including instruction and practice play. Chocolates, water and soft drinks will be provided too.
Your take home bundle includes the most current annual NMJL card, an extensive handout (complete with with rules, basic tips and strategies and relevant curated links for Mahjongg resources), and a small gift to remember your mahjongg experience!

Class includes participation in two 3-hour sessions (designed to be taken on subsequent days), the most current annual NMJL card, an extensive handout (complete with rules, basic tips and strategies for success, relevant curated links for Mahjongg resources) and a small gift to remember your mahjongg learning experience. This will book both sessions for you.
In Session 1 you learn the basics to play: the purpose, card, rules, steps of the game and strategies for success. In Session 2 you will experience the steps of the game from beginning to end, practice that gnarly Charleston (yes, it is a tad complicated!) and learn about strategies for ongoing success.
